Your three-year-old needs her own ETA.
Not a line on yours. Her own application, her own approval email, her own name.
Get that wrong and you find out at Bandaranaike immigration at 4am, with a sleeping kid on your shoulder and forty people in the queue behind you. There’s no counter to fix it at. Sri Lanka scrapped visa on arrival back in October 2025, and Visit Sri Lanka reports that anyone landing without an approved ETA is turned away or put on the next flight home.
That’s the trap.
Now the part almost nobody in Karachi has priced in yet.
Sri Lanka’s ETA Now Costs Pakistani Passports Nothing
Pakistani passport holders have paid zero for a Sri Lanka tourist ETA since 25 May 2026.
The Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration lists the free authorisation as a 30-day tourist visa with double entry allowed from the date of first arrival. The UK Foreign Office logged the same change in its Sri Lanka entry requirements, noting the ETA is issued free of charge as of 25 May 2026. Visit Sri Lanka confirms India, Pakistan and Nepal sit on that free list.

Do the math on a family of five.
Historic guidance put the tourist ETA around USD 50 a head. Five passports, roughly $250, gone from your paperwork budget.
And here’s the uncomfortable bit. Third-party “visa assistance” sites still charge 50to50to100 for an application that now costs nothing, which is why the only place you should ever type your passport number is eta.gov.lk. Fees paid before 25 May 2026 are non-refundable, so don’t waste a week chasing that either.
Your Sigiriya Tickets Cost Half What A British Family Pays
This is the fact that changes the shape of a December trip.
The Central Cultural Fund, which runs ticketing for Sri Lanka’s heritage sites, states that SAARC citizens get a 50% discount. Pakistan is SAARC. So at Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, you pay half of what the Dutch couple ahead of you pays.

A few more specifics worth knowing before you plan the driving days:
- Children under 6 enter free at Central Cultural Fund and Department of Archaeology sites
- The round ticket covers multiple heritage sites and stays valid for 2 months
- Ticket counters open 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily
- Prices are quoted in USD but payable in rupees at the day’s rate
- Online orders through the CCF eTicketing system are valid 90 days from purchase
Read that opening time again. 7:00 AM.
Sigiriya is 1,200 steps of exposed rock. The families who climb it at 7am walk down happy. The ones who arrive at 10:30 because a coach itinerary said so spend the descent bribing a crying eight-year-old with water. Same rock. Same ticket price. Completely different day.
5 Entry Details That Trip Up First-Time Visitors
- No visa on arrival. The system ended in October 2025. Approval must be in hand before you board at Karachi.
- Every traveller needs an individual ETA. Infants and children cannot be added to a parent’s application.
- The digital arrival card is a separate form. The Government of Canada advisory notes the online arrival card can be completed 3 days before you land. Immigration will ask for it. The ETA alone is not enough.
- Apply only on eta.gov.lk. Payments made to other sites do not process your ETA, and you can end up paying again at the port of entry.
- Give yourself 10 days. Processing usually runs 24 to 48 hours, but December is public holiday season on both ends.
Five lines. Each one has ruined somebody’s first morning.
Your Colombo Flight Probably Touches A Gulf Hub
Karachi to Colombo rarely goes in a straight line. Most routings for Pakistani families run through Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, and that matters more this season than last.
The UK Foreign Office currently warns that flights from Colombo routing via Middle Eastern hubs may be delayed, postponed or rerouted, and that your plans can be affected even when your destination sits well outside the region. EASA extended its conflict zone information bulletin covering Gulf airspace, including the Emirates FIR, until 30 September 2026, and industry watchers expect these bulletins to be extended rather than dropped while US-Iran tensions continue. Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah airports keep operating, but Dubai International has been logging rolling delays through September.
Rahat spent years inside Qatar Airways operations, and her read on this is blunt: in a season of rolling delays, the connection time is the whole ticket. A 75-minute transfer at a hub running reroutes is a gamble. One ticket, one carrier, a wider buffer, and a hotel that holds your room past midnight beats a cheap fare with a tight layover every single time.
That’s the sort of judgment call a fixed itinerary cannot make for you. It was built before anyone knew what September looked like.
What December Actually Feels Like In The Cultural Triangle

Monsoon hits the west and south coasts in summer, which is exactly why the winter months there run dry. TUI’s Colombo guide notes coastal highs often climb into the thirties, and that inland Kandy and the tea country sit cooler, so pack a jumper for the hill country even in December.
Practical version of that for a family trip:
- Cultural Triangle mornings for Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa
- Minneriya jeep safari in the late afternoon when the elephants come to the reservoir
- Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth, then hill country for two cooler nights
- Coast at the end, not the start, because nobody climbs a rock after four days of beach

One honest caution. Gem scams near the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy get reported regularly. A driver who works for your itinerary rather than a commission is worth more than any coupon book.
Package Agency Versus A Trip Built Around Your Family
| Standard package | Zaviamo approach |
| Visa line item priced last season, sometimes still billing a fee the government deleted on 25 May 2026 | You apply free on eta.gov.lk, we tell you which counter to use |
| One ETA for the family, kids assumed covered | Individual ETA and arrival card checked per passenger, infants included |
| Sigiriya at 10:30am because the coach runs late | 7:00 AM counter, down before the heat |
| Full-price gate tickets nobody questions | SAARC rate claimed, under-6s free, round ticket used across sites |
| Cheapest Gulf connection on the sheet | Routing chosen against current airspace advisories |
We’ve never sold a package. That’s not a slogan, it’s the whole reason Zaviamo exists. Ali got quoted a rigid seven-day Turkey itinerary that couldn’t add one Cappadocia night, and Rahat, who knew the industry from the inside, named it for what it was: reselling, not travel planning.
The December school break is roughly twelve weeks out. Hotel blocks in Kandy and Sigiriya for the last ten days of December fill first, and every Bahadurabad family who waits until November pays for the delay.
So tell us what your family actually wants. Three heritage days and four beach days? One elephant safari and zero early mornings? Halal food sorted in Dambulla, where options thin out fast?

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Sri Lanka ETA really free for Pakistani passport holders?
Yes. The Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration processes the tourist ETA free of charge for nationals on its free list, and Visit Sri Lanka confirms Pakistan joined that list effective 25 May 2026. The free ETA is valid for 30 days with double entry permitted. Apply only on eta.gov.lk, because third-party sites still charge for it.
Do children need their own Sri Lanka ETA?
Yes. Every person travelling needs an individual ETA, including infants and children, and they cannot be added to a parent’s application. Each approval comes back under the child’s own passport details. Miss one and that traveller can be refused boarding or entry.
Do Pakistanis get a discount on Sri Lanka heritage site tickets?
Yes. The Central Cultural Fund states that SAARC citizens receive a 50% discount at heritage sites, and Pakistan is a SAARC member. Children under 6 enter free, and the round ticket covers multiple Cultural Triangle sites for 2 months. Carry passports to the counter as proof of nationality.
Is December a good time for Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle?
December works well because the summer monsoon hits the west and south coasts, leaving the winter months dry on that side of the island. Coastal highs often reach the thirties while Kandy and the tea country stay cooler, so pack a light jumper for the hill country. Book heritage-area hotels early, since the last ten days of December fill first.
P.S. The ETA fee is gone and the gate tickets are half price, which means the money you saved on paperwork covers a proper driver-guide for six days instead of a rushed coach. That single swap is the difference between seeing Polonnaruwa and remembering it. Plan my Sri Lanka trip on WhatsApp.
P.P.S. Check the Gulf hub on your routing before you pay for the fare. That one line on the itinerary is doing more work this season than the hotel you picked.
