You typed it in at 11:40pm with the kids asleep.
“7 days Sri Lanka, two children, December, halal food.”
Thirty seconds later you had a plan. Day 1 Colombo. Day 2 Sigiriya at sunrise. Day 3 tea country by train. Clean fonts. Total confidence.
And a Thursday morning departure out of Karachi that doesn’t exist.
Only one airline takes you nonstop from Karachi to Colombo, and it doesn’t operate daily. DirectFlights lists SriLankan Airlines as the sole nonstop carrier on KHI-CMB with about 4 weekly departures from Terminal M, UL152 at 06:55 and UL184 at 17:50, flight time 3 hours 25 to 3 hours 35 minutes.
Your AI planner never checked that. It isn’t built to.

AI Is Excellent At Shortlisting. It Cannot Confirm Anything
Short answer: use AI to narrow options, never to lock dates.
These tools are real and they’re popular. Layla states it has planned over 2.35 million trips, with app ratings of 4.6 on iOS and 4.7 on Google Play. Trip.com now runs a free AI trip planner that supports Pakistan alongside 16 other countries.
Good at ideas. Blind to reality.
An AI itinerary is a template generated at speed. Which makes it a cousin of the thing that burned so many Karachi families in the first place: the 7-day, 6-night brochure plan that can’t add one night in tea country because “the package doesn’t allow that.”
Software writes a prettier template. It’s still a template.
Your trip, not a template. That distinction is the whole reason Zaviamo exists, and you can read how that started in about two minutes.
1. It Got The Flight Schedule Wrong
The schedule drives everything, and AI treats it as an afterthought.
Four weekly nonstops means your “Day 1” has to land on an operating day. Pick the wrong one and you’re suddenly connecting through a Gulf hub, adding seven hours and a 2am arrival with a four-year-old on your shoulder.
Fares move too. SriLankan’s own site lists Karachi-Colombo round-trip economy from around PKR 146,540 for early-December dates, with November and December starting higher than the September trough, per fare data shown on srilankan.com in October 2026.
Rahat spent years inside Qatar Airways before co-founding Zaviamo. Schedule gaps, aircraft swaps, minimum connection times, what happens to your bags when a flight gets re-timed: that’s her language, not a chatbot’s. When an AI plan says “fly Thursday”, she looks at whether Thursday is even flown.
2. It Got December Wrong, In Two Different Ways
December splits Sri Lanka in half, and the airspace situation outside Sri Lanka is its own risk.
Australia’s Smartraveller advice, still current at 5 October 2026, notes monsoon flooding and landslides from December to March in the northeast, and advises a high degree of caution overall. So a December plan built around Trincomalee and the east coast is fighting the weather. Galle, Mirissa, Bentota and the south and west coast sit in their dry window instead.

The UK’s FCDO advice, updated 21 September 2026, flags heavy inter-monsoon rainfall with possible transport disruption, and separately notes that some flights out of Colombo routed via Middle Eastern hubs may be delayed, postponed or re-routed because of the escalation in the Middle East.
That last line matters more than any hotel recommendation.
Regional instability is high right now, not easing. Gulf News live coverage on 5 October 2026 reported Strait of Hormuz tensions, Iranian naval action against a tanker, and Houthi statements calling Saudi airspace unsafe for civilian flights. OPSGROUP’s Middle East briefing has described main Gulf airspaces as open but with the risk of short-notice disruption raised again after renewed strikes.
Read that as: a Colombo trip is doable from Karachi on a direct flight. A Colombo trip built on a cheap two-stop connection through contested airspace in December is a gamble no AI will warn you about.
3. It Got The Ground Details Wrong
AI recommends. It never phones the hotel.
It will hand you a restaurant that shut last year. A “family room” that’s actually one double bed and a sofa. A Sigiriya climb scheduled at 1pm in heat your kids won’t forgive. A hill-country train leg on a section still being repaired.

It also doesn’t know that your mother-in-law travels with you and will not eat non-halal, that your 6-year-old needs a nap window, or that you want the driver to be the same person for all seven days so your wife isn’t negotiating with a stranger every morning.
Here’s what actually needs settling before anyone pays for anything:
- Which operating days your nonstop falls on, then build the itinerary backwards from there.
- Coast choice by month, so December doesn’t put you under northeast monsoon rain.
- Room configuration in writing, interconnecting or two keys, confirmed by the property, not by a listing.
- Halal food mapped per stop, not just in Colombo.
- One named contact on the ground plus a number that answers at 11pm Pakistan time.
Five things. An AI planner can answer none of them with certainty.
| What an AI or brochure template gives you | What a custom plan gives you |
| A Thursday flight that may not operate | Dates built around the 4 weekly KHI-CMB nonstops |
| Generic “best of Sri Lanka” route | South and west coast in December, east coast in July |
| Hotel names from a listing | Rooms confirmed with the property before you pay |
| Halal food assumed | Halal food mapped stop by stop |
| Nobody to call when a flight re-times | WhatsApp answered at 11pm, by a founder |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does SriLankan Airlines fly nonstop from Karachi to Colombo every day?
No. DirectFlights lists SriLankan Airlines as the only nonstop operator on the Karachi to Colombo route, with roughly 4 weekly departures from Terminal M. UL152 leaves at 06:55 and UL184 at 17:50, with flight time between 3 hours 25 minutes and 3 hours 35 minutes. Schedules change by season, so confirm operating days before fixing hotel dates.
Is December a good time to take Pakistani kids to Sri Lanka?
December suits the south and west coast, including Galle, Mirissa and Bentota, plus the cultural sites in the north-central plains. It suits the northeast far less, because Smartraveller notes monsoon flooding and landslides there from December to March. Build a December trip around the southern coast and keep Trincomalee for a summer trip instead.
Can an AI trip planner actually book my Sri Lanka trip?
AI planners like Layla and Trip.com’s free tool generate itineraries and shortlist hotels quickly, and Layla reports over 2.35 million trips planned. They don’t confirm flight operating days, verify room configurations with the property, or rebook you when a flight is re-timed. Treat the AI output as a wish list, then have a human confirm every moving part.

Keep using the AI. Steal its ideas. Then hand the plan to someone who can check it.
Tell us what the AI gave you. Paste the whole itinerary into WhatsApp if you like. You’ll get back what’s real, what’s not flyable, and a plan built around your family’s dates: Start planning your Sri Lanka trip on WhatsApp. Your first custom quote is free, within 24 hours, zero pressure.

P.S. Winter school break is roughly 10 weeks out, and the December Karachi-Colombo fares already sit above the September floor on SriLankan’s own fare pages. The families who lock dates while the nonstop still has seats are the ones not connecting through a Gulf hub at 2am in December. Plan my Sri Lanka trip on WhatsApp.
P.P.S. A Clifton family once asked a package agency for one extra night in tea country and got told the itinerary couldn’t move. That’s the exact sentence we built this company to stop hearing.
