Thursday night at Jinnah International. Bags tagged through to Bangkok. Your five-year-old asleep across two trolleys at 11:40pm.
And the agent says your Dubai leg is “subject to airspace.”
That sentence isn’t hypothetical this month. It’s the thing standing between a Karachi family and the first morning of their December break.
What The Airspace Warnings Actually Say Right Now
The short answer: the Gulf corridor is still restricted, and the restrictions run past the start of winter break planning.
Europe’s aviation safety agency has an active bulletin covering Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman airspace, reference CZIB-2026-07R3, currently valid into mid-November 2026, according to Europe extends Gulf airspace warning as US-Iran tensions rise. On 1 October the agency extended to November 16 its advice for airlines to avoid airspace over Lebanon, Iran and Iraq plus the territorial Gulf waters of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Oman, as reported in EASA Advises Airlines to Avoid Saudi, Jordanian, and Regional Airspace. Parts of Saudi airspace were added to the avoid list until the same date, per Euro Weekly News, 1 Oct 2026.
Airlines are already voting with their schedules. The National, 30 Sep 2026 reports Singapore Airlines, KLM and Air France have Dubai flights suspended until 24 October, with Wizz Air out of Dubai and Abu Dhabi on the same date.
Nobody is telling you the Gulf is closed. It isn’t. Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways are still moving enormous volumes of people every day.

But the margin for error on a connection through that corridor is thinner than it was in January. That’s the honest version.
Why This Lands Hardest On A December Break Trip
Your Eid trip can move. Your December trip can’t.
School resumes on a fixed date. The villa in Phuket is prepaid. Nani is flying in from Islamabad to meet you in Colombo. Five people, one date, zero slack.
Now picture a single reroute. Your Karachi departure pushes two hours. Your Dubai connection closes. The airline owes you a seat on the next flight, which is 26 hours later in December peak.
The airline does not owe you the hotel night you paid for. Or the Khao Lak transfer that left without you. Or the morning your kids were supposed to spend in the water instead of on a terminal floor.
That’s the real cost. Not the fare.
5 Routing Fixes To Settle Before You Pay
- Take the nonstop when one exists. From Karachi, two of the biggest December destinations have one. No connection, no Gulf hub, no second chance to go wrong.
- Buy the whole route on one ticket, one airline. Two separate tickets mean a missed connection is legally your problem, not theirs. One ticket makes rebooking the airline’s job.
- Put the buffer night at the front, not the back. Land a day before the villa check-in, not the morning of. A spare night in Colombo costs less than a lost week of prepaid resort nights.
- Get the rebooking rule in writing before you pay. Not “we’ll sort it out.” The actual fare rule: what happens if leg one is delayed, who pays for the hotel, how long the airline has to reaccommodate you.
- Keep the first two hotel nights refundable. Pay the small premium. In a month where airspace bulletins get extended at a week’s notice, flexibility on nights one and two is the cheapest insurance you’ll buy.

The Two Nonstops Out Of Karachi That Skip The Gulf Entirely
Thai Airways flies KHI to BKK nonstop, 5 days a week, in roughly 4 hours 50 minutes (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday), per Google Flights’ Karachi to Bangkok route page. Kayak notes that if you fly almost any other carrier on that route, you stop in Abu Dhabi or Dubai.
SriLankan Airlines flies KHI to CMB nonstop in about 3 hours 30 minutes, on an A330, as listed by FlightsFrom’s KHI-CMB schedule page.

Three and a half hours. That’s Karachi to Colombo. Shorter than most families spend queuing, connecting and re-clearing security inside a Gulf terminal.
So the December shortlist writes itself this year. Thailand and Sri Lanka are both reachable from Karachi without touching the corridor that currently carries the warnings.
Package Routing Versus Custom Routing
| Decision | Package itinerary | Trip built around you |
| Flight choice | Cheapest connection in the system, usually via a Gulf hub | Nonstop first, Gulf connection only if it genuinely beats it |
| Ticket structure | Whatever the consolidator loaded | One ticket, one carrier, protected connection |
| Arrival day | Resort check-in day, no cushion | Buffer night built in before the prepaid leg |
| If the leg cancels | “Contact the airline” | Rebooking rule agreed before you paid |
| Hotel terms | Non-refundable, because that’s the margin | First nights refundable where it matters |
This is the part the package model can’t fix. A fixed 6-night, 7-day product is priced on the cheapest routing available when it was loaded. Change the routing and the margin disappears, so the routing doesn’t change. Even when an airspace bulletin says it should.
That’s not an ethics problem. It’s a structure problem. Zaviamo has never sold a package, and the reason why started with exactly this kind of rigidity on a Turkey trip that wouldn’t flex by one day.
Rahat spent years inside Qatar Airways before co-founding Zaviamo. Irregular operations, reaccommodation, what a carrier will and won’t do for you when a sector drops. That knowledge is worth more in October 2026 than it was in any normal year, and it’s the reason your routing gets argued over before you pay, not after you’re stranded.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to fly through Dubai or Doha in December 2026?
Gulf hubs are operating and regional carriers are flying. The live issue is disruption risk, not closure. EASA’s advice for airlines to avoid Gulf territorial waters and parts of Saudi airspace currently runs to November 16, and several foreign carriers have Dubai suspensions dated to 24 October. Check your airline’s status and your government advisory close to departure.
Which airlines fly nonstop from Karachi to Bangkok and Colombo?
Thai Airways operates the only nonstop Karachi to Bangkok service, five days a week, at roughly 4 hours 50 minutes. SriLankan Airlines flies Karachi to Colombo nonstop in about 3 hours 30 minutes on an A330. Both avoid a Gulf transit entirely.
What happens to my hotel if my connecting flight is cancelled?
The airline’s duty covers your flight, not your accommodation contract. Prepaid non-refundable nights you miss are usually gone. Keeping the first two nights refundable and adding a buffer night before any prepaid resort stay protects far more money than a cheaper fare saves.
Should I book December travel now or wait for things to settle?
Book now, but book flexibly. December break inventory on the Karachi nonstops is finite and school dates don’t move. The variable worth watching isn’t the fare, it’s the rebooking rule attached to it.

P.S. The nonstop isn’t always the right answer. Sometimes a Gulf connection is still the better trip, and we’ll tell you that honestly. What we won’t do is put your family on a connection because it was the cheapest line in a pre-built itinerary. Send us your December dates on WhatsApp and we’ll check the routing before anything gets paid. P.P.S. EASA extended its bulletin on 1 October. The last extension moved by a month.
