Bags checked. Boarding in 40 minutes. Your daughter is already asking for the iPad.
Then the officer behind the glass stops turning pages, looks up, and asks why a family from Karachi is flying to Bangkok for nine days in December.
You have a visa. You have a ticket. Neither one answers the question he just asked.
Offloading Is The Part Nobody Plans For
Offloading is when Pakistani immigration stops you from boarding a flight you already hold a valid visa and ticket for. The foreign embassy said yes. Your own departure counter can still say no.
The scale is not small. FIA’s Additional Director General Immigration said the agency offloaded 39,786 passengers during 2025 under a risk-based screening system. Separately, Dawn reported that around 66,154 passengers were offloaded in the same period despite holding valid documents, with Lahore and Karachi named as the hotspots, after the post-2024 crackdown on migrant smuggling.
Those two numbers don’t match, and that gap is the whole problem. Nobody at the counter is going to explain which list you fell into.
The crackdown has a real reason behind it. Smuggling routes have killed Pakistanis, and departure screening is the state’s blunt answer. That reasoning doesn’t help you at 2am with a sleeping four-year-old on your shoulder and a Phuket hotel booking that starts tomorrow.
Why December Is The Tightest Month To Get This Wrong
Volume. Pakistan recorded 22,650,199 international passenger movements in 2025, including 11,552,959 departures, according to official FIA data reported by newsalert.com.pk. Winter school break stacks Karachi families into the same two-week departure window.

Routing is the second squeeze. The Gulf is not a calm sky right now. EASA’s conflict zone bulletin for the Middle East and Persian Gulf still flags a state of heightened tension around the Strait of Hormuz with the possibility of rapid escalation, and airspace over Lebanon and Iraq remains high risk. Gulf hubs keep operating, but short-notice disruption is back on the table.
Which means more Karachi families are being re-routed, re-timed, and re-issued tickets weeks before they fly. Every one of those changes creates a document mismatch. A mismatch is exactly what a screening officer is trained to notice.
Rahat spent years inside Qatar Airways operations before she and Ali started this. Her read on irregular operations is simple: when a route gets shuffled, the paperwork almost never gets shuffled with it. The hotel voucher still shows the old date. The return leg still shows the old flight number.
The 7 Documents FIA Immigration Actually Looks At
Carry these as printed paper, not just as screenshots on a phone that might be at 4% battery.
- Passport with real validity. Most destinations want six months beyond your return date. Check the expiry of every family member, including the infant.
- Visa or e-visa, printed. For e-visas, carry the approval PDF. The officer should not have to squint at your gallery.
- Confirmed return or onward ticket. A one-way ticket to a tourist destination is the fastest way to turn a 30-second check into a 30-minute interview.
- Hotel bookings covering every single night. Not three nights of a six-night trip. Every night, with dates that match your ticket exactly.
- Proof of funds. Recent bank statement, salary slips, or business documents. Have something that shows the trip is affordable to you.
- Proof of ties to Pakistan. Employment letter, business registration, school letter for the kids, property papers. This is what separates a tourist from a suspected migrant in a two-minute conversation.
- One protected booking instead of two unrelated tickets. A single ticket from Karachi through a hub to your destination is a different animal from two separate bookings. Transit rules can make the second one impossible even when your final visa is perfect.
That seventh point catches more well-off families than any other. The visa for your destination can be flawless while the transit leg is not legal for you at all.
The Counter Before The Counter
Here’s something the brochures skip entirely: FIA immigration is often not the first authority that can stop you.
Airline check-in gets you first. Several carriers flying out of Karachi apply an “OK to Board” requirement, where your visa has to be verified into the airline’s system before a boarding pass gets printed. Get that wrong and you never reach the immigration glass at all. You get turned around at the check-in desk while your hotel in Dubai or Kuala Lumpur quietly counts as a no-show.
Two separate institutions. Two separate rules. Neither one is printed on your visa.

Why The Package Model Fails At Exactly This Counter
A package agency sells you a set itinerary, collects payment, and issues what it needs to issue. Ask for a full documentation pack that matches your flight dates line by line and you’ll often hear the same shrug Ali heard about Cappadocia years ago. That shrug is what started Zaviamo.
| Package Agency | Custom Trip, Built for You |
| Voucher for the nights they blocked | Confirmed bookings for every night you travel |
| Ticket dates changed, voucher not updated | Documents reissued when the route changes |
| “Sort it out on the ground” | Sorted before you reach check-in |
| Office closes at 6pm | WhatsApp answered at 11pm when a route shifts |
| Same paperwork as a hundred families | Paperwork matching your family’s actual itinerary |
This is the part nobody markets, because it isn’t glamorous. It’s a folder. But a folder that matches your ticket is worth more at Jinnah International than any infinity pool photo.

If You Do Get Stopped, Do These Four Things
Stay calm and ask for a review by the Assistant Director or Deputy Director Immigration on duty. FIA operates facilitation desks at major international airports including Karachi, and lists helpline 1991 for passenger complaints. Note the counter number, the time, and your flight number. Ask for the reason in writing, because an offloading slip is what your airline needs to rebook you without charging full fare again.
FIA has also been building the other side of this. TechJuice reported that automated e-gates now being piloted are projected to cut clearance times by 70 to 80 percent for eligible travellers. Faster gates still won’t fix a hotel voucher with the wrong dates on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can FIA stop me from flying even if my visa is valid?
Yes. A foreign visa decides whether another country will consider letting you in. It does not remove Pakistan’s power to regulate your departure. FIA screening at the airport is a separate check, and passengers with valid visas have been offloaded at Karachi and Lahore.
Which documents should a Karachi family carry for a December holiday flight?
Carry printed copies of passports with six months validity, the visa or e-visa approval, a confirmed return ticket, hotel bookings covering every night, proof of funds, and proof of ties to Pakistan such as an employment or school letter. Make sure the dates on every document match your ticket exactly.
What should I do if I get offloaded at Jinnah International?
Ask for a review by the Assistant Director or Deputy Director Immigration on duty, and note the counter, time, flight number, and officer’s name. Request the reason in writing, since an offloading slip supports both a complaint and an airline rebooking. FIA lists helpline 1991 and runs facilitation desks at major airports including Karachi.

P.S. Thailand and Malaysia are two of the smoothest December runs for Karachi families right now, and both sit outside the Gulf disruption zone. Look at Thailand or Malaysia, then start planning your trip on WhatsApp. We build the itinerary and the paper trail at the same time, because one is useless without the other.
