Sri Lanka Just Made the ETA Free for Pakistanis

A four-hour flight from Karachi.

A green island with tea hills, elephants, a train that hugs the coast, and beaches your kids will not want to leave.

And as of a few weeks ago, one less line item on your bill.

On 25 May 2026, Sri Lanka stopped charging Pakistani passport holders for the tourist ETA. Wego reports that the fee waiver covers 40 nationalities, and Pakistan is on the list. The visa itself is still mandatory. Only the money is gone.

For a SAARC passport, that fee used to be US$20 per person for a tourist ETA (Wego). Multiply that by a family of four. Then think about how many families you know who got quietly charged for a visa that a decent planner could have told them was now zero.

That’s the part that stings.

What Actually Changed On 25 May 2026

Sri Lanka’s Parliament approved the free-visa facility on 7 May 2026, and the Department of Immigration set the start date at 25 May 2026 (VisasNews).

Here is what the free ETA gets you:

  • A 30-day tourist stay, with double entry from the date of first arrival (VisasNews).
  • Zero consular fee for Pakistani tourists, down from US$20.
  • Children still need their own ETA, though those under 12 are exempt from the processing fee (Wego).
  • A passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date (Wego).

One thing that trips people up. Free does not mean skip it. The ETA is still required before you fly, and you still apply online at the official portal. Fees paid before 25 May 2026 do not get refunded (VisasNews). So if you paid last month, that money is gone. If you’re booking now, it’s free.

The Footnote No Brochure Will Show You

Here’s where a package seller stops talking and a real planner keeps going.

Sri Lanka is open and tourism is running normally in most of the island (Ceylon Peacock Travels). But two live issues matter for your July plans.

Fuel. Because of the wider Middle East situation, the government is limiting fuel purchases and has put vehicles on a weekly quota (UK FCDO). The good news for you specifically: special arrangements are in place so tour operators and hotels keep their fuel (UK FCDO). Translation: a trip with a booked private driver is insulated. A wing-it, hail-a-tuk-tuk trip is not.

Weather. Cyclone Ditwah hit on 27 November 2025 and caused flooding and landslides. Ireland’s foreign ministry notes disruption continues in the Hill Country, including Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, while the south coast is largely unaffected and operating as normal (Ireland DFA).

So the smart move for a family this summer isn’t “avoid Sri Lanka.” It’s “sequence it right.” Weight the itinerary toward the south and the beaches, treat the Hill Country as a check-the-conditions add-on, and lock in your ground transport before you land.

That’s a routing decision. And routing is exactly the kind of thing a set package can’t flex on.

Getting There From Karachi

SriLankan Airlines flies Karachi to Colombo direct, and the hop is roughly four hours (Airpaz). Recent round-trip economy fares have shown around PKR 160,000 to 175,000 on the airline’s own Pakistan site (SriLankan Airlines).

That’s a short-haul price for a long-haul feel. Four hours and you’ve swapped Karachi traffic for a beach in Bentota.

Rahat spent years inside airline operations at Qatar Airways, and this is the kind of window she watches. Middle East airspace has been disrupted this year, which is nudging some travellers toward direct South Asian routes that skip a Gulf transit entirely. A direct KHI to CMB flight sidesteps that whole question. One board, one landing, no layover roulette.

Sri Lanka Vs The Usual Summer Suspects

Most Karachi families default to Dubai, Bangkok, or the Maldives for the summer break. Sri Lanka quietly out-competes all three on a few fronts.

Elephants at Yala. A tea estate in the cool hills once conditions clear. A UNESCO fort at Galle. Turtles on the south coast. You do not stitch that range together in Dubai.

How To Plan A Sri Lanka Family Trip Right Now

You don’t need a rigid seven-day, six-night box. You need a plan built around your kids’ nap times, your parents’ knees, and the current ground conditions. Here’s the shape of it.

  1. Apply for the free ETA early. Do it at least a week before you fly. Every traveller needs one, kids included. Keep a screenshot of the approval.
  2. Book your ground transport before you land. With fuel on a quota, a pre-arranged private driver is the difference between a smooth trip and standing at a petrol queue.
  3. Weight the itinerary toward the south coast. It’s operating normally. Treat the Hill Country as a conditions-dependent add-on, not the anchor.
  4. Match the pace to your family. A honeymoon couple can chase surf towns. A trip with a toddler and grandparents needs a slower spine and fewer transfers.

That last point is the whole game. A package can’t ask whether your youngest still naps at 2pm. A custom plan starts there.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sri Lanka ETA really free for Pakistanis now?

Yes. Since 25 May 2026, Pakistani passport holders get the 30-day tourist ETA at no consular fee, as part of a waiver covering 40 nationalities. The ETA is still mandatory and must be obtained before you travel. Fees paid before 25 May 2026 are not refunded.

Do children need their own Sri Lanka ETA?

Yes, every child needs their own ETA regardless of age. Children under 12 are exempt from the processing fee, and with the new waiver, Pakistani applicants of all ages pay nothing for the tourist ETA. Each child’s passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival.

Is Sri Lanka safe for a family trip this summer?

Tourism is running normally across most of the island, and the south coast is largely unaffected by recent weather. Two live issues to plan around are fuel rationing, where hotels and tour operators get special arrangements, and lingering Cyclone Ditwah disruption in the Hill Country near Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. Booking private transport and weighting your route toward the south handles both.

How long is the flight from Karachi to Colombo?

SriLankan Airlines operates a direct Karachi to Colombo route of roughly four hours. Recent round-trip economy fares have shown around PKR 160,000 to 175,000 on the airline’s own Pakistan site, though fares move with the season.

The Trip, Not The Template

The free ETA is a gift. The fuel-and-cyclone routing is the trap that a brochure will never mention, because a brochure sells the same seven days to a hundred families and hopes the ground sorts itself out.

We do the opposite. We don’t sell packages. We build your Sri Lanka trip around your family, your pace, and this week’s actual conditions on the island. Rahat knows the routing. Our team knows the ground. You get one plan made for you, not the leftover of someone else’s holiday.

Start planning your Sri Lanka trip. Tell us who’s travelling and when, and your first custom quote is free, within 24 hours, zero pressure. Send us your dates.

The summer break is a few weeks out. Direct Colombo seats and the good hill-country windows move fast once families realise the visa just got cheaper. P.S. That US$20-per-head ETA fee is gone, but plenty of families will still get quietly billed for it by someone working off an old rate sheet. Send us your plan and we’ll make sure you pay zero for what’s now free, and route you around the fuel queues while we’re at it. See how we build a trip on our process page, or check where else we go on our locations hub.
