Sri Lanka Just Made Its Tourist ETA Free for Pakistanis

For years, a Sri Lanka trip started with a small annoyance.

Fifty US dollars. Per person. Before you’d even packed a bag.

A family of five looking at a Colombo-Kandy-Galle loop was paying USD 250 in ETA fees alone. Not a fortune. But the kind of line item that makes you pause and recalculate.

That line item just disappeared.

What actually changed on May 25, 2026

Sri Lanka now grants Pakistani passport holders a free 30-day tourist ETA, effective May 25, 2026. With effect from 25.05.2026, nationals of 40 countries are eligible to obtain a tourist visa (ETA) free of charge for a period of 30 days.

Pakistan is on that list. Beyond the GCC, the full 40-country list includes India, Pakistan, China, the UK, the US, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Russia, and others.

This is a real shift. As recently as February 2026, the picture was different. Pakistani passport holders are ETA-eligible for Sri Lanka, but despite Pakistan also being a SAARC member, the full USD 50 fee applied as of early 2026.

So if you priced a Sri Lanka trip three months ago and shelved it over the per-head cost, the maths is different now.

One thing that has not changed, and it trips people up.

The free ETA is not a visa on arrival. Sri Lanka’s free ETA is not a visa on arrival. You must apply and receive approval online before boarding your flight.

You still apply at the official portal, eta.gov.lk, before you fly. The application takes about 10 minutes, and approvals typically come through within 24 to 72 hours.

Show up at Colombo without that approval email and you’re not getting waved through. Walk-ins without a pre-approved ETA can face delays or denial at the port of entry.

The fee is gone. The paperwork is not. Big difference.

The summer trap nobody warns Karachi families about

Sri Lanka south coast monsoon versus Trincomalee east coast in summer why Pakistani families should avoid Galle in July | Sri Lanka ETA Pakistani passport holders

Here’s where most package itineraries fall apart.

Summer break runs June through August. That’s when Karachi families fly. And that’s exactly when the southwest of Sri Lanka gets wet.

Sri Lanka experiences two monsoon periods: the southwest monsoon from May to October and the northeast monsoon from October to January.

Read that again. May to October. The southwest monsoon hits the southwest. Which is where Galle, Bentota, Unawatuna, and Mirissa sit.

The postcard beaches. The honeymoon stretch. Soggy in July.

A cookie-cutter package doesn’t care. It sells you the same Colombo-Galle-south-coast loop in January and July because the brochure was printed once and never thought about again.

A trip built for the season does the opposite.

In summer, you point inland and east. The east coast around Trincomalee and Pasikudah is at its best from May through September.

And the Cultural Triangle, the historical heart of the island, holds up year-round. The famous Cultural Triangle, home to Sigiriya’s Lion Rock, the ancient capital of Anuradhapura, and the medieval wonders of Polonnaruwa, sits in the north-central plains, which were not the areas most affected by recent storms.

That’s the move. Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, then east coast beaches in Trincomalee. Dry feet. Real history. No fighting the monsoon.

A smart summer Sri Lanka route, by region

RegionBest in summer?What’s there
Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa)Yes, year-round5th-century rock fortress, ancient cities, Minneriya elephants
East coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah)Yes, May to SeptemberCalm beaches, snorkelling, whale watching season
Kandy & hill countryMostly, check rail statusTemple of the Tooth, tea estates, cooler air
South coast (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota)No, it’s monsoon seasonSave it for a December to March trip

One caveat on the hill country. Due to landslide damage in late 2025, some up-country railway routes are not yet fully operational, with maintenance ongoing on sections serving Kandy, Nanu Oya, and Ella.

The Ambewela to Ella to Badulla section has already been restored and trains there run normally. The famous hill train is partly back. Partly.

This is the kind of detail that decides whether your scenic train morning happens or becomes a four-hour van ride nobody booked for. You want someone checking the live status before they put it in your plan, not after you land.

Is Sri Lanka safe for a family trip right now?

Short answer: yes, with the same common sense you’d use anywhere.

The US State Department maintains Sri Lanka at Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) as of February 2026, primarily due to civil unrest rather than security threats to tourists.

The country is open and busy. Tourist arrivals reached 1.8 million in 2025, marking a 23% increase from the previous year, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.

Violent crime against tourists remains extremely rare. Sri Lanka Police reported just three serious assaults involving foreign nationals during 2025, none resulting in fatalities.

The real risks are mundane, not dramatic. Roads and water. If you plan to travel by car in Sri Lanka, consider hiring a driver, as travel by public bus is generally unsafe due to aggressive drivers, poor maintenance and the risk of theft.

So you hire a vetted private driver, you skip the public buses, and you swim where it’s flagged. That’s the whole safety brief for a family doing the cultural and east-coast route.

Why a package can’t handle this trip

Look at everything above.

A free ETA that’s brand new and still confuses people. A monsoon that flips which half of the island works. A hill-country rail line that’s half-open and changing month to month. Halal food that you actually want sorted, not shrugged at.

That’s a planning problem. Not a brochure problem.

Zaviamo has never sold a package. We don’t have a printed Sri Lanka loop to push at you. We build the route around your family. Cultural Triangle if your kids love the Lion Rock story. Trincomalee beach days if they just want sand that isn’t getting rained on.

When the team recommends an east-coast base over a south-coast one in July, it’s because of the monsoon calendar, not because that’s what slot three of the package says.

Rahat spent years inside the airline industry at Qatar Airways. Ali is the founder who got burned by a rigid package on his own family trip and decided to build the opposite. You talk to them. Not a call centre that goes quiet after 6pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Sri Lanka tourist ETA really free for Pakistanis now?

Yes. From May 25, 2026, Pakistan is one of 40 countries whose nationals can get a 30-day tourist ETA free of charge. As recently as February 2026, the standard USD 50 fee still applied to Pakistani passport holders, so this is a recent and meaningful change.

Do I still need to apply for the ETA before I fly?

Yes. The free ETA is not a visa on arrival. You apply online at the official portal eta.gov.lk before boarding, the form takes about 10 minutes, and approvals usually come through within 24 to 72 hours. Arriving without a pre-approved ETA can mean delays or denial of entry.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka in summer?

For June to August travel, head to the Cultural Triangle and the east coast. The southwest monsoon runs May to October and soaks the south and west coasts, including Galle and Mirissa. The east coast around Trincomalee is at its best from May through September.

Is Sri Lanka safe for Pakistani families in 2026?

Generally yes. Major governments keep Sri Lanka at a “exercise caution” level mainly over occasional civil unrest, not threats to tourists, and violent crime against visitors is rare. The bigger risks are road safety and rip currents, which is why a private driver and swimming only at flagged beaches matter.

The one thing to do this week

The free ETA changed the maths. Summer break is the window. The route depends on a monsoon calendar most brochures ignore.

Tell us your dream Sri Lanka trip. Your first custom quote is free, within 24 hours, zero pressure.

P.S. The summer school-break booking rush for July and August is already building, and the good east-coast and Cultural Triangle stays move first. Get your custom quote now, while there’s still room to build the route around your family instead of squeezing your family into what’s left.

P.P.S. Message us on WhatsApp. We answer within 30 minutes, and yes, that includes after 6pm, because your flight doesn’t wait until office hours.
